Clans at The Games
The Clans Tent has become one of the most popular attractions at the Inverness Highland Games, bringing together Scotland’s historic clans and families in the heart of the Highland Capital. While the Games themselves trace their roots back to 1837, with origins in the preservation of Highland culture following the Jacobite era, the Clans Tent offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience a living part of that heritage. Here, clan representatives, historians, and enthusiasts gather to share stories, traditions, genealogy, and the enduring legacy of Scotland’s clans.
Since 2013, the Association of Highland Clans & Societies has overseen the Clans Tent, helping to create what is now the largest annual gathering of clans in Scotland. Supported by the Inverness Common Good Fund, the tent hosts a diverse range of clan societies and heritage organisations, each creating colourful displays that celebrate their history and modern-day activities. Visitors can meet clan members, explore family connections, learn about Highland traditions, and discover how clan culture continues to thrive both in Scotland and across the world.

The Largest gathering of Clans in Scotland

One of the most striking highlights of recent years has been the participation of clan representatives in the Games Opening Ceremony. Led by clan chiefs, senior officials, banners, and heraldic flags, the procession creates a spectacular display of Highland identity and pride. The sight of dozens of clans marching together into the arena serves as a powerful reminder that Scotland’s clan traditions are not simply historical curiosities but living communities that continue to play an important role in preserving and promoting Scottish culture.
Whether you have a Highland surname, a passion for Scottish history, or simply a curiosity about the traditions that helped shape Scotland, the Clans Tent offers a warm Highland welcome.
